Are you a pizzeria owner and want to make the best pizza in town? We are here to help!
First thing first, a bit of the history of pizza!
Do you know when, where and why the Pizza was born?
Brace yourself! A ‘primitive’ pizza can be traced back to the Romans in fact, there are records of ‘flatbreads with toppings’ in the Romans, Greeks, and even Egyptian times. They would place it on a hot stone or in mud ovens to make the bread, and then they would spread their toppings, such as herbs or mushrooms, on the flatbread.
The more recent history though goes back to the 18th century were ‘pizza’ would be born in Naples, a town in Italy, but here is the truth, pizza was not a delicacy, in those days, Naples’s people ate pizza, which was just a flatbread with toppings, because it was cheap! It was only sold from street sellers who would carry them around slicing pieces as small as a buyer could afford. Also, toppings could be as little as garlic to meet a customer’s need.
In1889 King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples, and instructed Raffaele, at Pizzeria Pietro, to prepare a signature Italian dish, he decided to make different types of pizzas with the intent to break away from their usual French meals.
It has been said that Queen Margherita after sampling each slice of the finger-licking goodness, gave one a thumbs-up to her favourite pizza whose ingredients had the colours of the Italian flag tomato (red), mozzarella (white) and basil (green), was her favourite. Since then Italy named the pizza after her: Pizza Margherita.
This approval would mark the beginning of a more respected pizza. That a queen can eat food considered to be for the poor, and like it, meant this dish was truly Italian.
Over the years Pizza has become one of the most popular food in the world and every culture has created its own variant – the Hawaiian pizza with pineapple and ham created in Canada, a New York pizza with pepperoni and mushroom and a Japanese version called Okonomiyaki with a colourful variety of toppings from tuna to spicy salami and vegetables. There are hundreds of versions of Pizzas!
As we import authentic Italian food, we are proud that our Pizza has become global but we still believe that the Margherita is simply the best! This is why we believe in importing the best ingredients from the region Pizza was born.
